The Last Days of Shishmaref

The film The Last Days of Shishmaref takes place on the island of Sarichef, which is part of Alaska. Sarichef is located slightly south of the Arctic Circle in the Chukchi Sea. A major drama is rapidly unfolding in this 49th state of the USA as a result of the global warming which now threatens the world. Director Jan Louter and cameraman Melle van Essen traveled to the island to record the traditional lifestyle of a community of Inupiaq Eskimos, which is now in jeopardy. Their centuries of tradition will probably be lost forever if they are forced to settle on the mainland.
